The Maine Medical Center Research Institute is seeking a scientific programmer who will lead the development and implementation of multiple tools for either genomic data analysis or image processing analysis. The genomics tool will perform cross-platform genomic data integration, and the image processing tool will process data sets derived from MR, ultrasound or CT scans. In particular, the programmer will be responsible for designing and populating appropriate back-end data structures or databases, developing query tools, developing and implementing pipelines for data analysis and visualization using a web-based interface, and implementing various computational algorithms and statistical tools with guidance from faculty. The genomics tool will involve cross-platform genomics integration, incorporation of genomic annotation data from public databases, and implementation of data mining and graphical tools for visualization. The image processing tool will involve 3D image analysis and quantitative image analysis. Other responsibilities of the position will include tool documentation, developing user documentation and tutorials, and training scientists and students to use the developed software.
o Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience working with genomic data and image processing data and to applicants with experience programming in a scientific research environment.
o Proficiency in R, Java, Python or Perl, relational database design/SQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery
o Preferred knowledge of OpenCPU, RStudio, and image processing tools such as ImageJ/Fiji
o Some combination of formal education in computer science, statistics, and preferably biology is desired. A Master s or Doctoral degree is preferred, however candidates with a Bachelor s degree and exceptional experience will be considered.
Position Summary
This individual''s primary responsibility will be to manage applications of a specific technology. This includes, but is not limited to oversight of using this technology, maintenance of the technology, overall technical and quality assurance operations, supply management, and training and instruction of the technology. The position may or may not have direct supervisory responsibility depending on the requirements of the project or program. Position availability is directly related to grant funding.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ph.D. or M.S. plus experience or a B.S. in a specialized related field.
2. 2 years of directly related experience.
3. May be proficient in operation of one or more applications within a specific technology. Skills should include ability to troubleshoot problems and analyze the data obtained from instrumentation.
4. Certifications based on technology, if applicable
5. Must have good organizational and personnel management skills.
6. Project management skills, communication skills, both personal and written, business skills and schedule planning acumen.
7. Visual acuity, manual dexterity, math skills and a scientific acumen required.
